The Atlantic County Park System contains many historic sites. Among the most notable are the following:
Weymouth Furnace: This site located at Weymouth Park contains the remains of an early industrial center which produced iron from 1801 to 1865 and paper from 1887. Iron was produced here by smelting the locally available bog iron (limonite) in a blast furnace which was fueled by charcoal. Cannons and cannonballs used by the American army and navy in the War of 1812 were made here. After a fire destroyed the furnace and forge, a papermill was erected on this site which produced manila paper from old rope, ship rigging and wood pulp.
Estellville Glassworks: The Estellville Glassworks located in the Estell Manor Park is one of the few remaining sites in South Jersey of a glassmaking facility. The remains of this structure date to 1825 and consist of sandstone and brick. The glass products produced in Estellville were shipped to locations all along the east coast such as New York, Boston, and Philadelphia. The site is a significant source of information about early to middle 19th century glass production in southern new Jersey. A recent restoration has helped to stabilize the remains and prevent further deterioration.
Belcoville Loading Company: This World War I shell loading factory was constructed in 1917. 155MM, 75MM and 8" shells were part of the plant's products. As many as 84 factory buildings and an entire town capable of housing 500 people were constructed in under five months time to meet the demands of the war. All that remains today are the plant's railbeds, now nature trails, and the foundations of the once busy buildings.
